History of the temple

Shravanabelagola has two hills one is Vijayagiri hill or Indragiri hill and other one is Chandragiri hill.  Lord Bhubali’s statue is situated in Vijayagiri hill.  Odegal Basadi which is situated in vijayagiri hill.  This temple is for Rishabhanatha the first tirthankar,Neminath tirthankar and shantinatha tirthankar.  Chandragiri hill is dedicated to Bahubali’s brother the Jain figure Bharat.  There are many temples in Chandragiri hill.  Chandragiri basadi which is situated in Chandragiri hill dedicated to Chandragupta Mauyra.  It was built by Ashoka in the 3rd century BC.  They believed that Chandragupta mauyra and Acharya Bahadrababu visit there for meditation.  Akkana Basadi which was built in 1181A.D. kattale Basadi, the main deity is Rishabhanatha.  The temple has 16 pillars.  It is considered as the largest Temple in the hill.  There are many temples in Chandragiri hill Chavundaraya Basadi, Prashvanath Basadi, The sasana Basadi are the temples.

About the temple

Shravanabelagola is a town which is located in Hassan district, Karnataka, India.  Shravanabelagola means “the white pond of sravana''.  ‘bel’ means white ‘kol’ means pond in Kannada.  Shravanabelagola is a well known place for Gomateshwara Jain Temple.  In that temple there is a big statue of Bahubali Gommateswara tirthankar.  He is the son of first tirthankar named Rishabhanatha.  Lord Bahubali is the first tirthankar who attained wordly liberty by his meditation over many years.  The statue of Lord Bhubali is considered as a big statue in the world.  It was built in 981 A.D., the statue was carved in a single piece of rock and it is one of the largest free-standing positions because Lord Bahubali meditated for many years in a standing position.  In 2007 Lord Bahubali’s statue was considered as Seven Wonders of the World.  It was 57 foot (17m) height monolithic.  It is so tall that it can be seen from 30km away.  It is located in Vijayagiri hill.

Festivals celebrated in the temple

The temple celebrates a ceremony called “mahamastakabhisheka” in which Lord Bahubali is adorned with liters of milk, flowers, ghee, saffron and gold coins on his head.  In that there many devotees are visited to take part in the ceremony.  The ceremony is celebrate every 12 year.  The last one is celebrated in 2018.

The timings of Shravanabelagola Jain Temple is from 6am to 11.30am morning and 3.30pm to 6.30pm.  These timings are also for poojas.

Road: Shravanabelagola is well connected by road from all important towns in Karnataka. You can get here from Mysore, Bangalore or Hassan.

Bus: Buses from Hassan are frequent.

Railway: Shravanbelgoda(SBGA) is a Railway station now, but it is served only by a dialy passenger train from Mysore (via Hassan). Nearest Big station is Hassan (57 Km) and Bangalore is (157 Km away)
